In September, USI teamed up with the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) during Freshers Weeks to hand out Organ Donor Cards in a bid to save students’ lives.

USI President Michael Kerrigan said, ‘In your lifetime, you’re three times more likely to need organ transplantation than dying in the circumstances to be considered a potential organ donor. Signing the donor card signals your willingness to allow your organs and tissues to be transplanted. USI is delighted to be linking up with the Irish Kidney Association to educate students about how having an Organ Donor Card in their wallets can save lives.’

With over 20 000 organ donor cards being distributed via Students’ Union fresher packs, Colin White, National Projects Manager for the Irish Kidney Association, said that, ‘we are delighted to once again partner with the USI in the promotion of organ donor awareness and we appreciate their on-going support.’

He added, ‘with so many students starting a ‘new life’ in third level education we are asking them to consider making a commitment to pass on the ‘Gift of Life’ by saying YES to Organ Donation and discussing their wishes with family.’

Students should know that your “next-of-kin” will have the final decision on donation. Students are being urged to let them know your wishes now.

The range of organs and tissue currently used for transplantation include the kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, corneas, heart valves, bones and tendons, small bowel and skin.

Because transplantation is now so successful, more and more patients have a chance of benefiting from transplantation. There are not enough donors to match the number of patients waiting for a transplant.

In the case of corneas and bone donations, age does not matter. For organs, it is the person’s physical condition, not age, which is the determining factor. Doctors decide in each case whether it is possible to use them.
