Students across the country took to the streets of Dublin today (Saturday February 15th) at 2pm, alongside members of the public, to protest against the lack of support provided by the Government to the speakers of our First Official Language.
Irish speaking students are furious about the lack of services provided by the Government through the medium of our native language; Irish. This is a breach of their fundamental and constitutional rights.
“Language Rights are Human Rights” is the message being conveyed today.
Vice President for the Irish Language of the Union of Students in Ireland, Feidhlim Seoighe:
“This Government is letting the Irish Speakers of the country down. By not providing services through Irish, they are essentially putting out the message that our National Language has no importance. Young People across the country are marching for the future of the Irish Language. Language rights are Human Rights.”
The protest is taking place at Parnell Square/The Garden of Remembrance at 2pm on Saturday afternoon and will then proceed to Leinster House, where Seo Linn and Kíla will perform.
