Yesterday, members of UCC Students’ Union (UCCSU) voted to remain with the Union of Students in Ireland (USI). Polls opened on Tuesday the 6th of March and closed on Wednesday the 7th of March. Final result was 86% of UCCSU voters saying yes to USI.

Speaking after the result was announced, USI President Michael Kerrigan said,

”We’re delighted to see UCC reaffirm affiliation with USI so strongly yet again. The positive vote sends a clear message that USI is working well for students. However, feedback we received was the need to improve our communications with students. USI will continue to improve communications with students in UCC about the work we’re doing for them. I would also like to congratulate the newly elected UCCSU team for the coming year, and look forward to working on issues like higher education funding, grants, and sustainability.”

Vice President for the Southern Region, Michelle Byrne went on to say,

“I’m very happy to see the largest college in the south remain members of USI. UCC has always been a strong advocate for USI and part of the very foundations of USI. Thank you to everyone who helped.”

Founded in 1959, USI is the national representative body for the 374,000 students in third level education on the Island of Ireland. USI works to improve and protect the lives of students every day on academic and social issues through campaigns, training and research.
