USI to hold three student protests over three days this month as student anger at Government inaction soars

Students are gearing up to show their anger and frustration at the soaring cost of higher education, at three Union of Students in Ireland-organised protests over three days in late November. Recent research showed that getting through a four-year degree now costs students and their families over €50,000 on average. And with Government showing no signs of reducing the Student Contribution Charge or addressing the student accommodation crisis, USI is launching the Cost of College campaign. The overall Cost of College campaign will involve two sub-campaigns; the No Keys, No Degrees campaign which was launched in September as a result […]

USI supports calls for reopening of Gay Mens’ Health Service

Delegates at the Union of Students in Ireland Congress have passed a motion to join calls for the reopening of the Gay Men’s’ Health Service (GMHS) clinic and other sexual healthcare facilities that are currently closed or highly restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  USI will now lobby for these services to be reinstated as a matter of urgency – the GMHS is currently only open for returning PrEP patients, leaving no services for other issues affecting gay men and the rest of the LGBTQI+ community and others. While a phased reintroduction of STI services is currently under way, this needs to be sped-up, […]

Mumps

The Union of Students in Ireland has urged any students without the Mumps vaccine to immediately make contact with their GP.  The call comes after the Health Service Executive revealed a more than trebling of the numbers affected by the illness, which can be very serious and extremely painful – and particularly risky for young men.  It’s highly infectious and spreads very rapidly through the same mechanisms as flu and the common cold Speaking after the HSE’s announcement, Greg O’Donoghue, USI’s Vice President for Welfare, said: “If you don’t know whether or not you’ve been immunised against mumps, now is […]

Redeveloping the website

The USI website gets quite a bit of traffic – we pull in around 94% of our viewers from Ireland and the UK (mostly from Northern Ireland).  We’re fairly extensively linked to and we attract an enormous amount of spam. The White Rose: Student solidarity can shine a light in the darkest of times.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place worldwide on the Sunday closest to 27th January every year. The day itself serves as a much needed highlighter of all forms of intolerance. Within the struggle of the oppressed people living under Nazi rule, there is a story for student circles worth reflection upon. Students’ unions have long espoused a view that we are not merely self-serving entities. Aside from trying to create education system we need, we also try to act as a social conscience, shaping the society that we believe in. In the summer of 1942, Nazi rule was engrained into practically […]
