An online national student protest and socially distanced demonstrations on campuses across the island have been organisation today (March 24) by the Union of Students in Ireland to demand action from Government on the union’s Education For All campaign. USI Launch Online SHAG week as Report shows a 22% increase in Syphilis with 24 men diagnosed per woman

  The Union of Students in Ireland has launched its online SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness Guide) week, urging young people to get into the habit of getting tested regularly, after a HSE report showed an increase of 22.1% in Syphilis from 2014 to 2015. Early infectious syphilis diagnoses were 2,290% higher in men than in women with 24 men diagnosed per woman. There was also an increase in Chlamydia with 70 more reported cases – there were 6,815 reported diagnoses in 2015, up from 6,693 in 2014. When taken over the past 12 months, 49% of all respondents have consumed normal strength cannabis compared to 44% who have used high potency cannabis. Respondents reported that the common reason why they do not use illegal drugs is 16% health consequences and 9% due to criminality.
