The Union of Students in Ireland was disgusted by the events carried out in Coolock yesterday, by a group of individuals intent on inciting violence, fear and hatred.
USI stands in solidarity with all those affected by the violence, particularly the worker who was injured at the site and the communities these protests are attacking.
This is a welcoming island and USI, Students’ Unions, and the students we represent, support all refugees and asylum seekers that come to this country fleeing war, persecution, or other conflict.
The organisers of these protests, and the violence that took place yesterday, are using people’s genuine concerns about the housing crisis, the health service, and other matters to advance their racist, xenophobic, hateful agenda and we will continue to call this out wherever we see it.
While there are those that continue to try and divide us as communities, we must stand together and say no to racism, no to hate and no to division. Ní neart go cur le Chéile.
