A student encampment set up by UCC BDS demanding University College Cork takes specific actions to end ties with Israel, has the full support of the Union of Students in Ireland. UCC BDS set up tents at the college last night to protest a response from UCC President, John O’Halloran to an open letter from UCCSU demanding full divestment by UCC from all financial ties to companies that are funding and profiting from the occupation of Palestine and the genocide in Gaza. UCCSU has released a statement in support of the protest and is currently collecting and providing supplies for […]

Unprecedented achievement due to protests on campus, and on the back of years of hard campaigning by Trinity BDS and its supporters The Union of Students in Ireland will continue to work with Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union and Students’ Unions across Ireland until all higher education institutions have fully divested from Israel. The Trinity Gaza Solidarity Encampment, which includes Students’ Union officers, members of Trinity BDS Campaign and other students, has secured an unprecedented win today with the college committing to working towards ‘full divestment from Israel’. Today’s deal comes after Trinity announced yesterday that it would review its […]
The Union of Students in Ireland stands in solidarity with Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union and the Trinity students who have set up an encampment for Palestine on the campus. USI also strongly condemns attempts by the college to fine the Students’ Union €214,000 for using their right to protest to demand the university cuts ties with Israel, as it carries out genocide against the Palestinian people. TCD Students’ Union and Trinity students have carried out a number of protests against the college’s links with Israel and against attempts by Trinity management to increase rents and fees for students, […]

The Union of Students in Ireland congratulates everyone involved in the Scrap the Green Paper coalition for its success in campaigning for Government not to go ahead with the changes to disability payments. USI is completely opposed to the changes that disability groups said would not help break down the barriers that face people trying to enter the workforce and would only leave them financially worse-off. In opposing the green paper, USI had said that Government should be looking to address the societal challenges that people with disabilities face in engaging with education, including third level, and in developing meaningful careers. And the union […]

Now is the time for Taoiseach Simon Harris to prove to the students of Ireland that he is not just ‘all talk’ by delivering long overdue and badly needed change to our higher education system, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI has met with Simon Harris on numerous occasions since he was appointed Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science in June 2020, but has not seen any real change to improve the increasingly stressful situation facing students in Ireland. Any measures that have been introduced have been temporary, piecemeal, or simply PR exercises aimed at making […]
