We put a release out to the Journal earlier this week which sought to highlight waste in public spending. In so doing, we offended some of our members and others in the design industry who took from the release that we thought design wasn’t valuable. We messed up and did some of our members a disservice. The Union of Students in Ireland is today saddened by the news of the passing of our friend and colleague, LIT Students’ Union Vice-President Steven Kavanagh. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult and challenging time. Steven was one of the most genuine and honest people to have been involved in USI for many years. His dedication and commitment to the student cause both on a national level and working on behalf of the students in LIT was unparalleled. Event: Launch of National Student Alcohol Awareness Roadshow ‘Mental Drinking’ The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) will today [on Monday] launch a new phase of its alcohol awareness campaign, ‘mentaldrinking.ie’. The information initiative, in conjunction with Alcohol Action Ireland, which is funded by the Health Service Executive, aims to explain clearly the link between binge drinking and mental ill-health, and to encourage students, particularly those who may be older brothers and sisters, to set a good role model for the younger generations coming up behind them. Clarity must be provided from higher education institutions and the Health Service Executive on important issues that have arisen for student nurses and midwives as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Union of Students in Ireland (USI).
