Third level students across Ireland are encouraged to participate in the world’s first LGBTI+ Youth Strategy being conducted by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs under the direction of Minister Katherine Zappone and chaired independently by journalist Una Mullally. The Union of Students in Ireland along with the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA), National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) and BelongTo, are promoting the event to young people between 15-24 to get involved and ensure they are part of shaping the LGBTI+ Youth Strategy for Ireland. USI welcomes the announcement today that Deputy Joe McHugh will be taking over the position of Minister for Education and Skills.

We would like to wish Minister Richard Bruton well in his new role. The third level education funding crisis will be the real test for any new Minister in the Department of Education and Skills, and we look forward to working collaboratively and proactively with Deputy McHugh. Minister McHugh’s appointment comes in the aftermath of Budget 2019, which commited a grossly inadequate level of investment in a system our future depends on, and did nothing to assist students in financial distress, or students who have been locked out of education due to a lack of accommodation.
