[…]will be distributed to college campuses. The packs contain a condom, a sachet of lubricant and information regarding safe sex and STIs. USI is also launching shag.usi.ie – the first website dedicated to informing third level students about safe sex. With almost a third of Irish men and women (30 per cent) never receiving any sexual health education in school, information provided within each SHAG pack aims to help students have safer sex and make informed decisions regarding their contraceptive choices. Despite the low number of people who have received formal sex education, there is a thirst for knowledge among Irish students, […]

Before the Leaving Cert Results on the 17th August USI Calls on the Public to Rent Spare Rooms to Students

[…]with a spare room to sign up for digs at homes.usi.ie. Leasing out spare rooms is a very straight-forward process, especially for parents whose children have flown the nest, or who are attending college the other side of the country. The average cost of college is €11,000 and leasing out a room to a student will greatly help with this cost, as you can make up to €12,000 annually tax-free.” USI said digs is a win-win for both students and homeowners – that students have all of the positives of living in a family home, and homeowners can make substantial […]

The Decision

[…]on the in-betweeners. The students who don’t qualify for the grant yet can’t afford the ever-increasing Student Contribution Charge (SCC). Patrick has just completed his Leaving Cert and is currently trying to find a way to pay for the SCC, which now stands at €2,250. Both his parents are working, his mother has three jobs, and yet they still can’t gather the €5,000 necessary to send both Patrick and his sister to college this September. His argument is simple and it’s one that USI has echoed over the years: If the Government makes third level education financially prohibitive to Leaving […]

Personal Safety – Keeping yourself safe

[…]or text it to a friend. When you arrive at your destination ask the driver to wait until you get inside the door before leaving again. Do not leave keys to your home in an easily accessible or guessable place. Everyone knows to look on top of the door frame, or under the mat, potted plant or just inside the letterbox. Always be aware of who’s around you when you go to an ATM. Do not use ATMs at night on isolated streets – always choose those with good lighting. Don’t be afraid to act assertively if you are uncomfortable […]

USI urges leaving cert students to consider digs accommodation for college

[…]Kerrigan said: ‘Digs are becoming a real affordable and viable alternative accommodation. The rising cost of living in the private rental sector, and on campuses is pushing students to dropout of college or become burdened with debt. We want to match students with a home to study in, and house as many students as possible in the face of a rental crisis.’ USI is also encouraging homeowners, including parents of students flying the nest next year, to rent any spare rooms to incoming students during the college term. Homeowners can register with www.homes.usi.ie and earn up to €14,000 a year […]
