[…]been provided on how third-level institutions will operate. Since the closure of colleges and universities in March, the USI has been campaigning for the operators of all student accommodation to refund students for rooms they could no longer use. While most colleges and universities agreed to provide refunds for vacated on-campus accommodation, most of the privately-operated Purpose-Built Student Accommodation companies […]

Students urged to register to vote ahead of November deadline

[…]to use their vote.” Over 10 years ago, the report ‘The Future of the Electoral Register in Ireland and Related Matters’ recommended that voter registration be done on a rolling or continuous basis, rather than the periodic registration windows used currently. This has proved successful in the UK and would be welcomed by USI. More recent reports have made similar recommendations. Registered Irish voters that live outside Ireland should also be facilitated to vote at Irish embassies or consulates. There are currently 115 nations that facilitate voting for their citizens abroad in one form or another. Reforming the Seanad should also […]

Because transplantation is now so successful, more and more patients have a chance of benefiting from transplantation. There are not enough donors to match the number of patients waiting for a transplant. In the case of corneas and bone donations, age does not matter. For organs, it is the person’s physical condition, not age, which is the determining factor. Doctors decide in each case whether it is possible to use them. The Spike in Rental Costs Could Push Students Away from Third Level Institutions

[…]the Union of Students in Ireland said the peaking rental costs in Ireland from the supply and demand ratio could push students out of the private rental sector and away from third level institutions. According to the latest quarterly report by Daft.ie, rents rose nationwide by an average of 3.2% in the third quarter of 2015, the largest three-month increase since early 2007. Supply on the market is at its tightest on record, with just over 4,000 properties available to rent nationwide. “This spike in rental costs could make accommodation unaffordable to students and could push them out of the […]

Union of Students in Ireland teams up with UPLIFT to call for signatories to open letter demanding student rent refunds

[…]refunds. The USI is calling on the companies – ISA Accommodation Dublin, Uninest, Aparto and Athlone Student Rooms – to look at ways they can support students who have paid thousands of euro for these facilities which they are not now using. These private accommodation companies charge substantial rent and if there was ever a time to give back to society, it is now. Some of these companies are telling students they can only get a refund if they find someone else to take the place, which is very unlikely in a pandemic, , or that they will only be refunded deposits and the […]

It is USI’s understanding that this payment is currently being treated as reckonable income. USI believes that this payment should be […]
