[…]support students who will be expected to work remotely for much of the new academic year by creating and investing in a new scheme that provides access to devices and better WiFi. The USI is calling for the urgent reduction in the Student Contribution Charge in light of the economic difficulties facing students who lost have jobs, had summer work hours reduced and were placed on a lower Pandemic Unemployment Payment because they were only working part-time during the academic year. The €3000 charge is the most expensive fee in the European Union to access an undergraduate course. The union […]

[…]Decriminalisation of abortion. The Union of Students in Ireland reaffirmed its pro-choice mandate at its annual Congress last March and also supports calls for the repealing of the 8th amendment to the Irish Constitution. Laura Harmon, USI Vice President for Equality and Citizenship, who will be speaking at the rally, said: ”The right to access abortions in Ireland is very much a student issue. UK Department of Health statistics show that approximately one quarter of women who give Irish addresses when availing of abortion services in the UK are between the ages of 18-24. Irish women are more likely to receive surgical abortions. Surgical abortions […]
[…]Sector Steering group chaired by the Department of Further & Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science is requesting submissions from parties interested in sharing their activities or research that will support the goals of the Working Group. The aim of the working group is to support student and learner wellbeing and engagement during COVID-19. We recognise there are many challenges facing students and we want to help address those challenges. There are many organisations and groups undertaking research or running programmes and initiatives that would be beneficial for the Working Group to be aware of as we progress our work. […]
[…]President, Lorna Fitzpatrick “Students planning to apply for the SUSI grant need reassurance that income changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic will be considered in their applications. “Many students and their families have lost jobs or had hours reduced as a result of the economic downturn caused by the measures taken to stop the spread of the virus. “Just yesterday, the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe outlined that the country is headed for a severe recession and the Irish economy is expected to shrink by over 10 per cent. “Students have already been severely impacted by the pandemic, including those […]
[…]of the restrictions imposed on them. The Union of Students in Ireland reaffirmed its pro-choice mandate at its annual Congress last March and also supports calls for the repealing of the 8th amendment to the Irish Constitution. Laura Harmon, USI Vice President for Equality and Citizenship said: “This bill does not go far enough. USI has consistently said that the professional opinions of no more than two medical practitioners should be needed. We need to trust women to make decisions about their own reproductive rights. USI also believes that abortion should be decriminalised. The Government cannot continue to export the […]
The Union of Students in Ireland welcomes the decision by cabinet to act on the USI’s Student Accommodation Bill and stop landlords forcing students to pay numerous months’ rent in advance to secure accommodation. The move this morning (Wednesday) comes on the back of significant campaigning by USI, Students’ Unions and students across Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cabinet also agreed to restrict the notice period students would have to give to exit rental contracts to 28 days, in line with the USI bill. This had been a particular issue for students during the pandemic when they had to leave, […]
[…]loss. Last night’s attacks in Brussels, across the metro network and the airport in that city, have left thirteen people dead; families devastated, children without parents and parents without children. Our student movement is, of course, powerless to confront the geopolitical mess creating these appalling atrocities; nevertheless we’ve always been unafraid to stand up for peace, at home and abroad. I know that you will want to send a message of sympathy and solidarity with the victims of these events- and to take a moment to think of those outside our movement […]
[…]Student Accommodation should be used to ease stress on vulnerable students who are not in appropriate accommodation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Union of Students in Ireland said today. The USI says the closure of campuses and the stay-home guidelines have been extremely difficult on students who live in cramped or overcrowded situations and do not have the space to study. USI Equality and Citizenship Vice-President Megan Reilly welcomed news that the Department of Justice and Equality has written to university presidents urging them to provide alternative accommodation for students in Direct Provision. Megan said: “Students in Direct Provision are […]

[…]on site are licencee agreements, which would exempt them from the need to comply with the mandatory 4% cap on rent rises. The Union of Students in Ireland supports the claim that student accommodation should be subject to the same rent controls as other accommodations in the area, and supports the view that such agreements should be considered leases and not licences to reside. Speaking in advance of the hearing, USI President Síona Cahill said “We have seen attempts to massively increase rents for students across Ireland already this year. A private accommodation provider near Dublin City University attempted to […]
[…]mental ill-health within the student population. […]to the Union of Students in Ireland. No student should be charged an extra fee to complete a mandatory and integral part of their college course and USI is calling on Ministers Simon Harris, Norma Foley and Catherine Martin to ensure this is the case for students of Hibernia College. The fee charged for the mandatory Gaeltacht placement for student teachers was waived in Budget 2020 through the reintroduction of the Gaeltacht Grant, something for which USI had campaigned heavily in the years prior. However, students in Hibernia College are ineligible for this grant as Hibernia is a private college, something […]
[…]UK Department of Health statistics show that 4,049 Irish women availed of abortion services in England and Wales. Of these women, 1,404 were between the ages of 18-24 and 2,566 of these were under the age of 30. Crucially, these figures are probably an underestimation of the true numbers as many Irish women give no Irish address for reasons of […]

[…]President, Clare Austick. Clare said: “We know going to college is extremely expensive in Ireland, with us having the highest fees in the EU, and these costs have been left to rise and rise in recent years. It was a huge challenge before COVID and now it is a crisis for many students and families. The figures published today are completely untenable. We cannot expect students or families to find this kind of money for three of four years in a row. Many students have lost part-time and full-time jobs over the summer months and throughout the year because of […]
[…]City University Students’ Union, and agrees that the proposed price rises are disproportionate and exploitative of students as a captive audience. USI President Michael Kerrigan said; “These providers are well aware that students can’t find alternatives to their offering, and believed they can get away with this sort of price gouging of students and their parents. DCU students are right to condemn what is an entirely unjustifiable rise of almost 27% in some cases, this decision ultimately lead to some students deciding they simply cannot afford an education.” “At €3,000 per year, Ireland already has the 2nd highest third […]
