Today’s anti-racism rally sends message that Ireland is for all, says USI

[…]it and work to eradicate it. Before last week, the far-right was being pushed back as tens of thousands of people joined in solidarity marches for Palestine, and we must continue to do that. “This violence, and the way it was encouraged and incited online, shows us yet again the need for the Hate Speech and Hate Crime Bill and that it must be enacted as quickly as possible by Government.” For our part in particular, USI will work to ensure that this hatred stays out of our campuses and that all students are able to be safe in this country. USI […]

[…]Framework. However, USI says Government needs a plan to increase this funding by €11.5 million in order to reach safe counsellor to student ratios to combat the mental health crisis currently affecting our young people, including our students. This crisis was shown in the Jigsaw My World 2 survey where 8,290 of those surveyed were students, and of the over 8,000 student respondents, 10 per cent said that they had attempted suicide. […]and recovery 4) Provide education and awareness to the wider population 5) Provide specialised training around eating disorders for mental healthcare professionals Finally, it cannot be ignored that mental health only receives approximately six per cent out of the overall health budget, compared to the international standard of 12 per cent. The role of students in 1916 compared to the role of students today

Young people are at the forefront of change and progression in every society. On the 23rd May 2015 Ireland had affirmed to the world what it means to be a modern republic. Since the marriage referendum in Ireland, students have become aware that they can change the world through politics by becoming actively, meaningfully and substantially involved throughout political parties and beyond. Today’s youth engagement is not indifferent to politics – it is simply different to previous generations. Today’s students don’t absorb the propaganda-influenced media. They see through the heavily-edited, scripted politicians. They reject injustice and inequality. A century […]

USI welcomes the announcement today that Deputy Joe McHugh will be taking over the position of Minister for Education and Skills.

We would like to wish Minister Richard Bruton well in his new role. The third level education funding crisis will be the real test for any new Minister in the Department of Education and Skills, and we look forward to working collaboratively and proactively with Deputy McHugh. Minister McHugh’s appointment comes in the aftermath of Budget 2019, which commited a grossly inadequate level of investment in a system our future depends on, and did nothing to assist students in financial distress, or students who have been locked out of education due to a lack of accommodation. There has been a […]

[…]which has been expected since last summer. It also contains personal testimonies from students about what it was like to ‘come out’ and why marriage equality is important to them.  In her contribution to the submission, recently graduated Louise* talks about the inherent inequality that meets young people when they identify themselves as LGBT: “I truly believe that the depression, isolation and loneliness experienced by many young LGBT people like myself stems from the fact that the minute you say the words aloud […]
