USI warns of growing sense of despair among Ireland’s youth as CSO reveals 39% unemployment rate for 15-24 year olds

The Union of Students in Ireland has warned of a growing sense of despair among Ireland’s young people following the CSO’s announcement that 39% of 15-24 year olds are unemployed. Today’s announcement comes as statistical proof that Ireland no longer offers its youth the opportunity they deserve to become productive members of society. With increased cuts to investment in education, including savage cuts to both undergraduate and postgraduate grants, the government seems determined not to improve the prospects of young people. HEA Chief breaks with Government on cut of postgraduate grants

The Chief Executive of the Higher Education Authority, Tom Boland, has said that the government’s decision to cut postgraduate maintenance grants was ‘inconsistent with the national skills policy’. Speaking at Students’ Union Training in Athlone IT, Mr. Boland said the HEA did not advise the Minister for Education on the issue of postgraduate grant cuts, but in his personal opinion the decision seemed at odds with the stated policy of the government to develop a smart economy.
