[…]in collaboration with the relevant Irish language organisations and teachers’ unions, teacher-training colleges, between students, teachers, and others, to publish a collaborative report that would set out a progressive, comprehensive, and multilateral strategy regarding the teaching of Irish at primary and post primary level.   USI spoke about the long-term failures surrounding the teaching of Irish at primary and post primary level, as well as he lack of a united and collaborative effort to find a solution to these failures. Congress condemned the impact that this has had, in the absence of clearly defined policy that would improve the teaching […]

USI Fighting to Keep Insurance Rates for International Students Down

[…]students already pay extortionate fees to study in this country and should be able to avail of insurance that meets their needs and doesn’t put them out of pocket by hundreds of euros. Moreover, the insurance cover currently used by students go beyond health and also includes repatriation, but under this judgement there will be no repatriation covered, meaning that students are likely to have worse cover than at present. Up to 30,000 students could be affected by the changes, should they be implemented.    We are continuing our lobbying efforts and will monitor the debate as it goes forward […]

Síona Cahill elected new USI President

[…]and we must resist absolutely the commodification of education in Ireland. “The housing crisis is now rumbling into a rental crisis – pricing students out of accommodation. Students are waiting up to 6 weeks to maybe see a counsellor on campus. It is the very basis of our movement that we create the space to criticise and improve the systems we interact with as students. This will be a core battle into next year, and I am committed to it.” Cahill went on to say, “I look forward to working with the students of Ireland, and come July 1st I […]

[…]USI’s new resource on alcohol and mental health, mentaldrinking.ie, contains easy-to-understand information on the risks that alcohol consumption, particularly binge drinking, pose to young people, and the impact this can have on their mental health and wellbeing. As part of its campaign, the USI is also encouraging third level students to lead by example and pass on the truth about harmful drinking and the many problems it causes to the next generation, particularly their younger brothers and sisters. Alongside its information and awareness-raising campaign, the USI will be providing alcohol brief intervention training, beginning with student union welfare officers and […]

Students Call On Senators To Reject Loans Scheme In Favour Of Public Investment In Education

[…]to support a Labour private members motion this Wednesday, rejecting any move to implement an income-contingent loan scheme but instead to publicly invest in third level education. In advance of the debate, USI President Michael Kerrigan said, “A decision to go ahead with an income-contingent loan scheme will increase emigration and sends a clear message to our future students: take your €20,000 debt, your degree, and get out.  Ireland currently charges the 2nd highest higher education fees in Europe after the UK, and we’ve seen in the UK that the poorest students will graduate with £57,000 debt hanging over their […]

USI Welcomes First National Student Accommodation Strategy

[…]and third-level institutions in urban areas, and puts actions in place to end the shortage. Minister Bruton said, “Housing output fell by over 90%, from 93,000 homes in 2006 to just over 8,301 in 2013. We lost a decade worth of home building after the crash of 2008 and the construction industry was in ruins with over 160,000 jobs lost. “Eleven months into the implementation of Rebuilding Ireland there is strong evidence that the focus on increasing and accelerating supply is starting to work, with planning permissions and commencement notices both up. “Today, as part of the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan, I am launching […]

Joe O’Connor: Let’s hope the Government remembers students when it comes to Budget sums

[…]The cuts have been going on for so long and they have been so deep that the only aspiration of Ministers and their officials is to get through to the other side of the Budget without making a U-turn. This is the political equivalent of that old game of ‘Operation’, where the objective is to remove vital organs from a patient without touching the sides and setting off a buzzer. Many of us who are arguing for the protection of aspects of government spending have been trapped into a circular discussion about why our issue is more worthy than another. […]

USI Welcomes Wage Increase Coming into Effect for Student Nurses and Midwives

The Union of Students in Ireland has welcomed the proposals coming into effect after the joint efforts of the INMO, SIPTU Nursing, the Department of Health, PNA, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, independent facilitator Mr Sean McHugh, and HSE, with supporting research done by USI to increase wages for students’ nurses and midwives.
