[…]people, it’s clear that they remain a key target of alcohol marketing and advertising and that cheap alcohol is being promoted relentlessly at students. That is why we would like to see the Government take decisive action as part of the Public Health Alcohol Bill and regulate to ensure that students and younger generations are adequately protected from alcohol harm.” Suzanne Costello, CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland, said it was very encouraging to see students leading by example on what is a serious problem for all age groups and sectors of Irish society. “When it comes to drinking, young people […]

Student Digs: National Survey 2023 report published

[…]a requirement to have a written agreement which sets out minimum protections for both parties in order to benefit from the rent-a-room tax breaks, but Government repeatedly says that such legislation would put homeowners off renting out rooms in their homes. However, this research shows that most homeowners feel more secure having an agreement, and the lack of legislation simply allows more malign homeowners a free reign to do whatever they when renting out a room to students or others. With the ability to make €14,000 on offer, there should be some basic rules and requirements, to stop people being evicted or […]

[…]environment, and we have created an environment for them that is saturated with alcohol – it is cheap, widely available and they are also exposed to a huge amount of alcohol marketing and advertising, which is such a powerful influence on their drinking behaviour,” said Ms Costello. “However, 18-24 year olds are also acutely aware of the impact of anxiety, depression and self-harm on their contemporaries and increasingly recognise binge drinking as a major contributing factor to poor mental health. It’s very encouraging to see the USI are taking the lead to raise awareness of the strong link between binge […]

USI Statement on LSE Occupation

[…]than the whole of society and is the latest display of a real desire among students and staff worldwide to reclaim their campuses. The Irish student experience has changed significantly during times of austerity. Student supports have been drastically cut over the last decade and student fees have risen excessively. Students in Ireland pay the second highest fees in Europe. The USI wishes to convey its support for the direct action taken in LSE, following on from the recent occupation of the New University in Amsterdam and similar activities in Warwick, Birmingham, Sheffield and Oxford. It is resoundingly clear that students and staff in higher education […]

An apology to design students

[…]right. Design is enormously valuable as a profession and a discipline. Irish industry and industry worldwide relies on brilliant Irish designers educated in our colleges, and we’re proud to have them as members. Additionally, USI is a frequent client for design agencies and freelancers throughout the year, have been for many years and we will again. We know from our own experience that Irish designers offer great value and their work brings enormous benefits to our work – grabbing people’s attention, making our campaigns more effective and helping us work for students of all disciplines. We’re really sorry we created […]

Redeveloping the website

The USI website gets quite a bit of traffic – we pull in around 94% of our viewers from Ireland and the UK (mostly from Northern Ireland).  We’re fairly extensively linked to and we attract an enormous amount of spam. All of this makes developing and managing the site somewhat complex – but rewarding when viewership increases due to changes to the site. We’re already seeing some small evidence of that today. The new design aims to put the stories we think will interest the rest of the world in our work – we have an external readership focus for 80% […]

Not really great options. And options that exclude certain women- those under 18 who do not have the resources to secure these options and women who do not have the finances to fund these options.   Over 4,000 women every year travel outside of Ireland to access abortion services. And over a quarter of these are under the age of 24. Not all of these women are victims of terrible […]
