Union of Students in Ireland Criticises New Draft Report of Student Loan System

The Union of Students in Ireland has criticised the new proposed loan scheme for students. It said it is unreasonable and will deter students from applying to college. Irish college fees are already the second highest in Europe. College graduates could face loan repayments in the region of €25 a week over a 15-year period under major reforms to third-level funding proposed in a Government-commissioned report.                  Kevin Donoghue,  USI president A draft report recommends the introduction of a new income-contingent loan system for graduates, increased maintenance grants for students from low income families and a greater contribution from both […]

Threat to ‘Slash’ Student Grants will be faced down

[…]84% of families are already struggling to meet the cost of third level. “75,000 students and their families depend on the grant each year, a grant that has been targeted in each of the last four Budgets. Any further cut to the grant will push these struggling families over the edge. “SERD, launched by USI this week, will mobilise these students and their families, creating a block of over 200,000 votes that will be ready to punish any attempt to target struggling students in the upcoming budget”. Note: USI President Joe O’Connor will be attending the ‘March for Marriage’ in […]

The student cohort provides a source of available labour especially at those times of the year when part-time staff are most needed. This scheme will give local employers an opportunity to advertise and their vacancies at no cost and directly to students. We will be encouraging our members to avail of this unique and new service.” Paul Hannigan, President, LYIT,  is also supporting this […]

58% of Students Miss Meals to Stay in College!

[…]‘my parents’, 16% said ‘my job’, and 6.5% said ‘loans’.   According to the Irish Times, the paper prepared for Minister Pascal Donohue suggests that such a scheme, involving an increase in the present student contribution from €3,000 to €4,000 would ultimately fail as a solution to the funding crisis in higher education. In addition, it argues that the scheme would be “socially regressive” by requiring all students, irrespective of their socio-economic background, to pay the registration fee.   Full answer responses:   Which of the following things, if any, have you had to do to stay in college? 878 […]

‘Once-off’ student fee reduction in Budget 2023 will not remove barrier of high cost of college in Ireland

[…]year will not remove the significant barriers that currently face the hardest-pressed students and their families. We need a move towards publicly funded higher education now. We also don’t see any measures in this Budget to address the serious student accommodation crisis, which is making college inaccessible, or an extreme hardship, for many.  “Without significant action on student housing, including the announcement of a new student accommodation strategy, capital grants for affordable purpose-built student accommodation and rent freezes – along with action on the cost-of-living – these tweaks and changes will not make much of a different to students who […]

USI Announces National Demonstration For Publicly Funded Higher Education

[…]long-term decision to invest in a publicly-funded third level education model, as outlined in the the Cassells report – a report published over 15 months ago on higher education funding. USI President Michael Kerrigan warned that, ‘Education is in the red. Don’t be fooled by the propaganda of a student loan. An income-contingent student loan outlined in the Cassels report is a drastic increase in fees from €3,000 to €5,000 a year in disguise. The moment we accept higher fees and a loan scheme, we are saddling people with €20,000 of mortgage-modeled debt and forcing them to emigrate. The message […]

USI Student General Election Manifesto 2016

[…]and those responsible must now ensure that it is our most vulnerable who are the first to see the fruits of our recovery. No party who has served in government in the last generation can abdicate responsibility for the situation we are now in. However young people and students are not interested in political point scoring and the tit-for-tat remarks that dominate our political conversations. Young people want candidates and political parties to demonstrate kind of leadership that befits the positions they seek and to map out a clear path to strong, sustainable future. The Union of Students in Ireland […]

Access to third level education should be a right for young people in this country, and should never be seen as a privilege.
