USI stands in solidarity with Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union encampment and pledges support for other similar student protests

[…]to stand with the union. The announcement of the fine on Thursday was clearly an attempt to stop the further escalation of the protests and to stop this encampment going ahead. College management thought they could scare students into not standing with the students in the US whose actions are clearly having a global impact. This has not worked, and it will not work. USI Vice President for Campaigns, Zaid Al-Barghouthi said: “TCD Students’ Union has acted in line with the wishes of the majority of staff and students at Trinity College. A recent poll carried out by Trinity News […]

Students have no confidence in this Government and Taoiseach’s resignation should trigger general election

[…]resign as leader of the Government, the people should be given the chance to say who they want to run the country. The students we represent have been left struggling by this Government, with students sleeping in cars, on sofas, dropping out, or working full-time jobs along with studying, because of the cost of accommodation and going to college. And so, USI completely refutes Taoiseach Varadkar’s assertion that the economy and society is in a good place or that we are out of the cost-of-living crisis. However, if there is no general election and Fine Gael is simply allowed to […]

[…]Strategy, which will be published later this year,” and the Government statement said that the new policy was that “Government will fund the delivery of purpose built student accommodation.” (statement here) But this policy was already announced in November 2022, when Minister Harris said: “This landmark policy response will, for the first time, see the state providing financial support in the construction of on-site student accommodation, and underpins the policy commitments set out in Housing for All. I am pleased today to confirm Government has approved my proposal to directly intervene in the delivery of student accommodation.” (statement here) USI President, Chris Clifford […]

‘Important and needed’ mental health funding still leaves student services below recommended levels

[…]currently have just one counsellor for every 2,240 students, even though it is recommended by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services that there should be one counsellor for every 1,000 to 1,500 students. USI Vice President for Welfare, Colette Murphy said: “We had been in touch with Students’ Unions and student counselling services across the country in relation to this funding and when this announcement would come. We know there was a lot of worry about the fact the announcement was later than usual and about what the funding would be. And while we’re glad to see that it hasn’t been reduced from […]

Transgender Day of Remembrance call by USI for overhaul of Trans healthcare

[…]and Citizenship, James Curry said: “The TENI survey, and numerous other research projects around the world, have shown us that transgender people who are not receiving healthcare or are left on long waiting lists, are very much at risk of self-harm and suicide. On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we remember trans people who have lost their lives to this risk or to the violence that many face for being trans. “We also need to continue to fight for better healthcare, so that our trans community can access the care they need. In the TENI research, 75 per cent of respondents […]

USI statement on the situation in Palestine

[…]has continued to escalate in recent times. As stated time and time again by USI and many others, the international community has stood by and allowed the persecution of the Palestinian people and the upholding of an apartheid system by the occupying state of Israel for decades, to a point that is unbearable. USI stands with the people of Palestine and reaffirms its position in favour of a peaceful resistance against that apartheid and occupation, and will continue to mobilise against Israel’s international war crimes and acts of genocide against the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza. We call on the […]

On World Suicide Prevention Day, USI calls for necessary investment to bring the number of student counsellors up to recommended ‘safe and ethical’ levels

[…]to make the necessary investment needed to bring the number of student counsellors up to the internationally recommended ‘safe and ethical’ levels. Colleges and universities in Ireland currently have only one counsellor for every 2,240 students, even though it is recommended by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services that there should be one counsellor for every 1,000 to 1,500 students. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government has increased student mental health funding from €3 million to €5 million, but that figure has only been allocated on an annual basis, leaving these services unable to plan for the future. Ahead of Budget 2024, USI is calling for Government […]

USI Opening Statement in Joint Oireachtas Committee on Research and Innovation Bill 2023

[…]academic representation and puts the researcher out of formation, management and oversight of the new agency. Our experience with the funding agencies that exist has been quite poor. From sick and maternity leave to research funds, the research agencies have always closed their doors to students’ and postgraduate researchers’ concerns. There is nothing in this Bill which will ensure that all stakeholders will be engaged and listened to when it comes to general concerns in future. We propose that the ordinary members of the board should be active researchers from a wide range of disciplines, across all career stages, including […]

‘Once-off’ student fee reduction in Budget 2023 will not remove barrier of high cost of college in Ireland

[…]‘once-off’ €1,000 reduction is of course welcome, students are left not knowing where they stand for the future.  And the reduction comes too late for students who have already deferred their places in college this year because they could not afford the costs.  USI President, Beth O’Reilly said: “Today’s Budget was a missed opportunity to permanently reduce the Student Contribution Charge and start the move towards abolishing fees. In our Pre-Budget submission, USI called for a permanent €1,000 reduction in fees. In these expensive times, this ‘once-off’ reduction will be quickly spent on high rents and soaring costs-of-living.  “Through this […]

USI Vice President for Postgraduate Affairs, Waqar Ahmed, has signed an open letter from the newly formed PhDs’ Collective Action Union (PCAU) requesting a meeting between the group’s Acting President and the various PhD funding agencies to discuss how stipends can be brought to a liveable and equitable level. As USI has stated on numerous occasions, PCAU says the current PhD stipend is insufficient on several accounts and the current cost-of-living crisis and inflation levels have promoted this new action. The letter, which has almost 500 signatures, states: “The Central Statistics Office (CSO) reported an approximate 9.1 per cent […]

The international student movement has a clear position of no to war and expansionism, and yes to peace and the protection of the human and social right to live, learn and study in a peaceful environment. The USI submission also highlights the unfairness of the reality that those under 23-years-old are currently automatically assessed as dependant, regardless of their actual living situation, unless they can prove estrangement from their family. Commenting on USI’s submission to the SUSI review, USI President, Lorna Fitzpatrick said: “Equity of access to higher education is a core component of the work of the USI. As it stands SUSI is not fit-for-purpose and excludes many students and potential students who need financial support.
