USI warns of growing sense of despair among Ireland’s youth as CSO reveals 39% unemployment rate for 15-24 year olds

[…]Ireland we thought we could never return to. The decision the government has to make is simple – should Ireland be a better country for the next generation or will they be the first generation in Irish history to have a worse quality of life than their parents. If the answer is the former, we have an opportunity amid crisis to prioritise the most vulnerable at their time of need. Today, I challenge the government to combat the problem of youth unemployment and rebuild the smart economy from the ground up.” -ENDS- For more information, contact USI Media and Communications […]

USI, TCDSU and Trinity BDS will follow the process step-by-step to ensure Trinity keeps to today’s agreement to work towards ‘full divestment from Israel’

[…]way on this issue. Even just over the last week, we have seen management go from fining the SU €214,000 and making threats of sanctions against individual students, to what has happened today. And that fine is still in place currently. The local union and USI will work together to ensure these promises are kept and that the arbitrary fines and threats are quashed. “Students all over Ireland have been calling for their institutions to divest from Israel and have led and joined protests for an end to the genocide and for a free Palestine. Trinity has realised the strength […]

USI stands in solidarity with Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union encampment and pledges support for other similar student protests

The Union of Students in Ireland stands in solidarity with Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union and the Trinity students who have set up an encampment for Palestine on the campus.   USI also strongly condemns attempts by the college to fine the Students’ Union €214,000 for using their right to protest to demand the university cuts ties with Israel, as it carries out genocide against the Palestinian people. TCD Students’ Union and Trinity students have carried out a number of protests against the college’s links with Israel and against attempts by Trinity management to increase rents and fees for students, […]

Union of Students in Ireland welcomes scrapping of Green Paper on Disability Reform, hard fought for by disability activists

The Union of Students in Ireland congratulates everyone involved in the Scrap the Green Paper coalition for its success in campaigning for Government not to go ahead with the changes to disability payments. USI is completely opposed to the changes that disability groups said would not help break down the barriers that face people trying to enter the workforce and would only leave them financially worse-off. In opposing the green paper, USI had said that Government should be looking to address the societal challenges that people with disabilities face in engaging with education, including third level, and in developing meaningful careers. And the union […]

Taoiseach Simon Harris must show students of Ireland that he is not ‘all talk’ on accommodation crisis and soaring cost of going to college

Now is the time for Taoiseach Simon Harris to prove to the students of Ireland that he is not just ‘all talk’ by delivering long overdue and badly needed change to our higher education system, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI has met with Simon Harris on numerous occasions since he was appointed Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science in June 2020, but has not seen any real change to improve the increasingly stressful situation facing students in Ireland. Any measures that have been introduced have been temporary, piecemeal, or simply PR exercises aimed at making […]

TCDSU, USI and Trinity students are assembling at Front Square at 11.11am this morning and march to the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science to highlight the student accommodation crisis, the need for more student mental health resources and the need to abolish tuition fees. TCDSU President, László Molnárfi said: “This Government has done undeniable harm to our communities. This is not by accident, or by incompetence. The system is working exactly as it is intended to. With the ability to make €14,000 on offer, there should be some basic rules and requirements, to stop people being evicted or having their rent increased without any notice or discussion. Digs should also be brought into the scope of Rent Pressure Zone Legislation, which USI worked on in the past. “Government engaging in smoke and mirrors in relation to student accommodation” – USI

That plan promised regular progress updates, but the last of those was published in Q3 of 2019. Members of the USI Coiste Gnó met with Minister Harris last Thursday, before Friday’s announcement, but were not given any concrete information on when this strategy would be published or any details on what will be delivered. Expansion of apprenticeship places positive, but must come with supports and resources

The recent announcement by Government that it is providing €17 million to expand apprenticeships across the higher education sector is positive, but the sector should not be expanding without the necessary supports, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI believes that apprenticeships are an important way of opening up access to third level education to more potential students and should be put on an equal footing with other avenues into third-level education. However, while USI recognises the importance of providing these places, the union is worried that Government is again following its trend of expanding college places, without the […]

‘Important and needed’ mental health funding still leaves student services below recommended levels

[…]Suicide Prevention Day in September, USI called for Government to increase this funding to €11.5 million in order to reach safe counsellor to student ratios to help combat the mental health crisis currently affecting our young people, including our students. Colette continued: “These aren’t USI recommended ratios, they are the internationally accepted figures. And I think if anyone considers the struggles young people currently face and how many people they know that suffer from mental health issues, they would not think that one counsellor for every 2,240 students is enough. Also, it is not fair for Government to expect these […]

USI backs TUS SU campaign to stop university management removing student space

Actions by management in the Technological University of the Shannon to take a dedicated student space away from the Students’ Union will affect their ability to look after the welfare of their students and should be stopped, says the Union of Students in Ireland. Without notice or discussion, TUS SU was informed that university management is taking away the student space on the Athlone campus that is currently used by the Students’ Union to store and distribute free period products, condoms and exam packs, as well as for other student-focused campaigns. Today’s anti-racism rally sends message that Ireland is for all, says USI

Today’s workers gathering, organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, in solidarity with those affected by last week’s hate incited violence in Dublin city centre, sent an important message that Ireland is for all, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI was proud to attend today’s rally, along with many students, to show that we condemn in the strongest terms, the racism that was on display last Thursday evening, and we will continue to work to end all forms of racism in our society. STATEMENT: Union of Students in Ireland responds to Budget 2024

[…]in Ireland. USI welcomes the repeat of the reduction in the Student Contribution Charge by €1,000 and €1,500, the €750 tax relief for renters, the increases in the SUSI grant and the increase in the minimum wage. As Minister Harris said in his statement, the package will put some money back in students’ pockets, however, Budget 2024 had no measures that will have a medium or long-term impact on the cost of third-level education, particularly the student accommodation crisis and USI sees that as a missed opportunity. As student representatives it is difficult for USI to look at this Budget […]

Increasing number of third-level places without extra accommodation and support services is populist and futile move by Government

[…]while widening access to higher education is an important aim – that we share – increasing places without the required accommodation and support services that will keep students in education, such as mental health facilities, will only result in students struggling through college, deferring places or dropping out. USI Deputy President and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Bryan O’Mahony said: “Simply increasing third-level places gives Government the chance to have positive headlines on CAO day, but without proper accommodation provision and adequate investment in colleges and universities, it is not going to achieve the aim of opening-up access to third-level […]

USI calls for urgent action as review of state supports for PhD researchers falls short of addressing key issues

[…]€25,000, while seemingly promising, still falls below the living wage threshold. The review’s lack of tangible recommendations regarding work status, non-EEA PhD researchers, part-time PhD researchers, and a living wage level stipend, have raised significant disappointment among PhD researchers. “The review fails to recognise PhD researchers as employees with employee status, contracts of employment, and collective bargaining rights. It also fails to recommend adequate social security provisions such as sickness and parental benefits, protective leave, maternity and paternity leave, contract extension under extenuating conditions, and pension rights. The current system leads to inconsistencies, unequal opportunities, and limited resources for researchers.” […]
