Government urged to support USI student accommodation bill in Dáil debate

Government TDs are being urged to support the student accommodation bill which will be debated in Dáil Eireann on Wednesday (April 28), by the Union of Students in Ireland and Students’ Unions all over Ireland. The USI’s Residential Tenancies (Student Rents and Other Protections) (Covid-19) Act 2021 was tabled in late February by Sinn Fein and signed by 56 opposition TDS. The bill already has the support of all TDs from Sinn Fein, the Labour Party, the Social Democrats, Solidarity-People Before Profit and the Independent Group and would grant students much-needed protections. Today, the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is supporting the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) large-scale ‘super Yes canvass’ of Dublin today from 12pm to 6pm across key locations all over the city. Students are being asked to consider whether they should travel to rented accommodation by the Union of Students in Ireland, in light of new restrictions announced for universities and colleges on Friday afternoon. USI Calls For Further Supports In Second-Level To Reduce College Dropout Rates

USI called on the need for further supports to be made available to second-level guidance counsellors to support school-leavers in making the jump to third level ahead of the report published today by the Higher Education Authority based on students progressing from first to second year between the 2013/14 and 2014/15 academic years which showed more than 6,000 students drop out of first year. 88% of Smartvote app users are in favour of abortion according to new data released today by the Union of Students in Ireland and Smartvote.ie. The new Election tool has been causing a political engagement storm across the country and has been labelled ‘The Tinder of Politics’. USI elects second term President for first time in almost a decade

The Union of Students in Ireland will have a two-term President for the first time in almost a decade after Lorna Fitzpatrick was re-elected to the position at the union’s Congress on Wednesday (May 27). Due to COVID-19 public health restrictions, USI Congress was held via Zoom with over 200 delegates voting online for the 2020-2021 Executive Team and numerous policies and motions.
