USI President welcomes return of DCU after 13 year absence

Students at Dublin City University have voted to rejoin the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) after an absence of 13 years from the national union. After two days of voting online and at designated polling stations: Total Votes: 1451 Total Yes: 726 Total No: 725. This is possibly the tightest result ever. The result of the referendum will see close to 11,500 members of DCU Students’ Union engage with the national union in campaigns relating to graduate jobs, third level funding, marriage equality and mental health awareness, amongst numerous other campaigns. Students Demonstrate at Russian Embassy – Protect LGBTQ Rights.

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI), Students’ Unions and student LGBTQ societies  demonstrated outside the Russian Embassy in Dublin at 11am today (Wednesday, February 5th).  There was a crowd of 50 + people that braved the bad weather to show solidarity and fight for human rights. The demonstration is taking place two days before the Winter Olympic Games commence in Sochi. Organisers of the demonstration wish Irish athletes the very best of luck in the Games. As more and more students turn to financial institutions to get loans for higher education, its important to know your rights as a consumer. Less than 50% of Irish consumers feel informed about their rights when taking out credit and most do not feel confident about choosing the credit agreement that best suits their needs.  Out of the age group 18-35-year-olds only 25% are aware of the key rights that they are entitled to under the EU Consumer Credit Directive[1]. Press Release Wednesday, May 2, 2013 For Immediate Publication The students of Cork Institute of Technology have voted to re-affiliate with the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) after a 14 year absence from the national union. After two days of voting, 71.2% voted in favour of re-affiliation. The final tally was 630 in favour and 255 against.  The result of the referendum will see over 7,500 members CIT Students’ Union engage with the national union in campaigns relating to third level funding, marriage equality and mental health awareness, among others.
