The urgent call comes ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10th as tax cuts dominate the outcomes of Budget 2018 due to be released tomorrow by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe. […]housing needed to be invested in as a long-term solution. The Budget allocated an additional €160million in total current funding for third level education over three years, the first significant expansion in Government spending on higher education after a decade in which such spending was cut by 33%, but USI said it was €200 million short of what the Cassells report identified as necessary in the same period. The union said that there is a global shift in favour of publicly-funded education because it benefits every sector of society – the economy, employment, culture, health, science, tech and transport, and […]

Union of Students in Ireland welcomes scrapping of Green Paper on Disability Reform, hard fought for by disability activists

The Union of Students in Ireland congratulates everyone involved in the Scrap the Green Paper coalition for its success in campaigning for Government not to go ahead with the changes to disability payments. USI is completely opposed to the changes that disability groups said would not help break down the barriers that face people trying to enter the workforce and would only leave them financially worse-off. In opposing the green paper, USI had said that Government should be looking to address the societal challenges that people with disabilities face in engaging with education, including third level, and in developing meaningful careers. And the union […]

Taoiseach Simon Harris must show students of Ireland that he is not ‘all talk’ on accommodation crisis and soaring cost of going to college

Now is the time for Taoiseach Simon Harris to prove to the students of Ireland that he is not just ‘all talk’ by delivering long overdue and badly needed change to our higher education system, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI has met with Simon Harris on numerous occasions since he was appointed Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science in June 2020, but has not seen any real change to improve the increasingly stressful situation facing students in Ireland. Any measures that have been introduced have been temporary, piecemeal, or simply PR exercises aimed at making […]

The Union of Students in Ireland is joining calls for an immediate general election, saying students have no confidence in the Government and now is the time for change, with Leo Varadkar announcing his resignation today. Students have told USI clearly that they have no confidence in this Government to take the action that is badly needed on student issues, and Students’ Union officers voted in favour of a no-confidence motion at a recent national meeting. The survey showed that respondents are paying an average of €660 across the country to live in digs, with just 43 per cent of them having use of the room for the full seven days a week – this shows that digs is not a very cheap or low-cost option. “Government engaging in smoke and mirrors in relation to student accommodation” – USI

Government is engaging in smoke and mirrors in relation to student accommodation by announcing and reannouncing the same ‘news’ and ‘policies’ without any concrete plans or information, according to the Union of Students in Ireland. Last Friday, Minister Simon Harris, Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister Pascal Donohoe held a publicity event in DCU and sent out press releases stating that they would “unveil plans for 500 student accommodation beds” and publish “a new long-term policy to deliver student accommodation”. However, neither the student accommodation beds, nor the policy, were new announcements. The DCU student beds reannounced by Minister Harris on […]

Expansion of apprenticeship places positive, but must come with supports and resources

The recent announcement by Government that it is providing €17 million to expand apprenticeships across the higher education sector is positive, but the sector should not be expanding without the necessary supports, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI believes that apprenticeships are an important way of opening up access to third level education to more potential students and should be put on an equal footing with other avenues into third-level education. However, while USI recognises the importance of providing these places, the union is worried that Government is again following its trend of expanding college places, without the […]

‘Important and needed’ mental health funding still leaves student services below recommended levels

Funding for student mental health services announced by Minister Simon Harris on Monday still leaves Ireland far off the internationally recommended ‘safe and ethical’ ratio of students to counsellors, says the Union of Students in Ireland. While any funding for student mental health services is important and needed, USI says we must consider the actual services being provided to students, who have been shown time and time again to be, as Minister Harris says “facing mental health challenges like no other” generation. The €5 million funding announced is expected to keep student mental health services at their current level. Colleges […]

USI backs TUS SU campaign to stop university management removing student space

Actions by management in the Technological University of the Shannon to take a dedicated student space away from the Students’ Union will affect their ability to look after the welfare of their students and should be stopped, says the Union of Students in Ireland. Without notice or discussion, TUS SU was informed that university management is taking away the student space on the Athlone campus that is currently used by the Students’ Union to store and distribute free period products, condoms and exam packs, as well as for other student-focused campaigns. Transgender Day of Remembrance call by USI for overhaul of Trans healthcare

On International Transgender Day of Remembrance, the Union of Students in Ireland says the Irish Government has blood on its hands due to the inaccessibility of Transgender healthcare in Ireland. USI is joining trans and LGBTQ+ organisations, in calling for a complete overhaul of how trans people are treated by the health system in Ireland, saying it falls far below international human rights standards. The current system sees trans people waiting up to five years to even start accessing care, and GPs are not allowed to prescribe hormone replacement therapy to their trans and non-binary patients.
