Students call time on binge drinking and decide to set a good example

[…]people, it’s clear that they remain a key target of alcohol marketing and advertising and that cheap alcohol is being promoted relentlessly at students. That is why we would like to see the Government take decisive action as part of the Public Health Alcohol Bill and regulate to ensure that students and younger generations are adequately protected from alcohol harm.” Suzanne Costello, CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland, said it was very encouraging to see students leading by example on what is a serious problem for all age groups and sectors of Irish society. “When it comes to drinking, young people […]

[…]in Cork, the HSE Addiction services are issuing a warning about possible contaminated ‘party pills’ and advise people to not consume any unknown substances that they are offered at this time.”   Further Survey Results: 82% of students have tried illegal drugs. While it is common for some students to try illegal drugs at least once in their lifetime, recurring drug use is lower for illegal drugs compared to alcohol. […]a requirement to have a written agreement which sets out minimum protections for both parties in order to benefit from the rent-a-room tax breaks, but Government repeatedly says that such legislation would put homeowners off renting out rooms in their homes. However, this research shows that most homeowners feel more secure having an agreement, and the lack of legislation simply allows more malign homeowners a free reign to do whatever they when renting out a room to students or others. With the ability to make €14,000 on offer, there should be some basic rules and requirements, to stop people being evicted or […]

USI Statement on LSE Occupation

[…]than the whole of society and is the latest display of a real desire among students and staff worldwide to reclaim their campuses. The Irish student experience has changed significantly during times of austerity. Student supports have been drastically cut over the last decade and student fees have risen excessively. Students in Ireland pay the second highest fees in Europe. The USI wishes to convey its support for the direct action taken in LSE, following on from the recent occupation of the New University in Amsterdam and similar activities in Warwick, Birmingham, Sheffield and Oxford. It is resoundingly clear that students and staff in higher education […]

An apology to design students

Irish industry and industry worldwide relies on brilliant Irish designers educated in our colleges, and we’re proud to have them as members. Additionally, USI is a frequent client for design agencies and freelancers throughout the year, have been for many years and we will again. We know from our own experience that Irish designers offer great value and their work brings enormous benefits to our work – grabbing people’s attention, making our campaigns more effective and helping us work for students of all disciplines. We’re really sorry we created […]

Redeveloping the website

The USI website gets quite a bit of traffic – we pull in around 94% of our viewers from Ireland and the UK (mostly from Northern Ireland).  We’re fairly extensively linked to and we attract an enormous amount of spam. All of this makes developing and managing the site somewhat complex – but rewarding when viewership increases due to changes to the site. We’re already seeing some small evidence of that today. The new design aims to put the stories we think will interest the rest of the world in our work – we have an external readership focus for 80% […]

USI President Lorna Fitzpatrick spoke on this: “Today we are highlighting the fact that while the festive period is an expensive time for most, students are being put in debt every month of the year in order to pay for their education. It makes a mockery of the possibility of free speech if, in order to have someone discuss LGBT equal rights issues, someone else must be found to say that LGBT people deserve less than equality. USI worries that the ruling of the BAI could hand the power of veto and censorship to those opposed to equal marriage – by simply operating as a cartel to refuse appearances, anti-equality organisations could prevent the arguments for equal marriage even being heard, let alone debated. The White Rose: Student solidarity can shine a light in the darkest of times.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place worldwide on the Sunday closest to 27th January every year. The day itself serves as a much needed highlighter of all forms of intolerance. Within the struggle of the oppressed people living under Nazi rule, there is a story for student circles worth reflection upon. Students’ unions have long espoused a view that we are not merely self-serving entities. Aside from trying to create education system we need, we also try to act as a social conscience, shaping the society that we believe in. In the summer of 1942, Nazi rule was engrained into practically […]
