USI tenders wide-ranging submission to Government review of SUSI

Extending supports to part-time and online students and increasing the level of awards are among the suggestions made by the Union of Students in Ireland in its wide-ranging submission to the Government’s review of the Student Grant Scheme (SUSI). The level of financial support given to students through SUSI was drastically cut in 2011 and has not been reinstated, despite soaring costs of living for students, particularly accommodation costs. Students have suffered from the housing crisis as developers have focused on building luxury accommodation that students cannot afford. USI is also calling for the eligibility for the higher non-adjacent rate of the […]

Delegates at the Union of Students in Ireland Congress have passed a motion to join calls for the reopening of the Gay Men’s’ Health Service (GMHS) clinic and other sexual healthcare facilities that are currently closed or highly restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  USI will now lobby for these services to be reinstated as a matter of urgency – the GMHS is currently only open for returning PrEP patients, leaving no services for other issues affecting gay men and the rest of the LGBTQI+ community and others. USI statement on postgraduate stipends increase

Today’s announcement of extra Government funding to increase the postgraduate stipends of Irish Research Council researchers is welcomed by the Union of Students in Ireland as one of the steps needed to address the unacceptable precarious working conditions of postgraduates in Ireland.
