Student Digs: National Survey 2023 report published

Students and homeowners renting out rooms both feel more secure and comfortable when there is a written agreement between the parties, according to the findings of Student Digs: National Survey 2023, published today by the Union of Students in Ireland. The research carried out among students that currently, or recently, lived in digs found that 66 per cent of the respondents have a written contract with the homeowner and that in 68 per cent of those cases, the homeowner suggested they have such an agreement. USI has been lobbying for legislation that would make it a requirement to have a […]

“Government engaging in smoke and mirrors in relation to student accommodation” – USI

[…]Student Accommodation Strategy would be published last summer – the current plan runs from 2017 to 2024, but its promises have not been implemented. That plan promised regular progress updates, but the last of those was published in Q3 of 2019. Members of the USI Coiste Gnó met with Minister Harris last Thursday, before Friday’s announcement, but were not given any concrete information on when this strategy would be published or any details on what will be delivered. USI Vice President for Campaigns, Zaid Al-Barghouthi said: “There is nothing that we can measure. There are no targets. All we got […]

Expansion of apprenticeship places positive, but must come with supports and resources

The recent announcement by Government that it is providing €17 million to expand apprenticeships across the higher education sector is positive, but the sector should not be expanding without the necessary supports, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI believes that apprenticeships are an important way of opening up access to third level education to more potential students and should be put on an equal footing with other avenues into third-level education. However, while USI recognises the importance of providing these places, the union is worried that Government is again following its trend of expanding college places, without the […]

‘Important and needed’ mental health funding still leaves student services below recommended levels

[…]the country, USI has been informed that one college service has had to reduce the number of ’emergency appointments’ for students from six to two, and others have seen students not willing to avail of services because they think they are too busy. In its Pre-Budget Submission, and in a statement on World Suicide Prevention Day in September, USI called for Government to increase this funding to €11.5 million in order to reach safe counsellor to student ratios to help combat the mental health crisis currently affecting our young people, including our students. Colette continued: “These aren’t USI recommended ratios, […]

USI backs calls by disability activists for the Government’s Green Paper on Disability Reform to be scraped

The Union of Students in Ireland is backing calls by disability activist groups for the Government’s Green Paper on Disability Reform to be scraped and disabled people to be directly involved in preparing future plans. USI members attended today’s protest at Dáil Eireann organised by Neuro Pride Ireland, and the union is completely opposed to the changes that disability groups say will not help break down the barriers that face people trying to enter the workforce and will only leave them financially worse-off. Government should be looking to address the societal challenges that people with disabilities face in engaging with […]

USI backs TUS SU campaign to stop university management removing student space

Actions by management in the Technological University of the Shannon to take a dedicated student space away from the Students’ Union will affect their ability to look after the welfare of their students and should be stopped, says the Union of Students in Ireland. Without notice or discussion, TUS SU was informed that university management is taking away the student space on the Athlone campus that is currently used by the Students’ Union to store and distribute free period products, condoms and exam packs, as well as for other student-focused campaigns. The Students’ Union received an email that the college […]

Today’s anti-racism rally sends message that Ireland is for all, says USI

Today’s workers gathering, organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, in solidarity with those affected by last week’s hate incited violence in Dublin city centre, sent an important message that Ireland is for all, says the Union of Students in Ireland. USI was proud to attend today’s rally, along with many students, to show that we condemn in the strongest terms, the racism that was on display last Thursday evening, and we will continue to work to end all forms of racism in our society. USI also attended to show its support to everyone who was affected by the […]

USI statement on the situation in Palestine

The Union of Students in Ireland expresses its devastation and grief at the loss of all innocent lives due to the recent escalation of violence in Palestine, focused particularly on Gaza and on both sides of the Gazan border. USI condemns Israel’s disproportionate and retaliatory attacks on the people of Gaza and rejects the claims of ‘self-defence’ as justification for the collective punishment of Palestinian civilians. In line with USI policies and mandates, USI reiterates our utmost support for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, and our strong opposition to the occupation of Palestine, which has continued to […]

PhD stipend increase falls short of level recommended in Independent National Review of State Supports for PhD Researchers published by Minister Harris, says USI

The €3,000 stipend increase for PhD researchers announced today, while welcomed, does not reach the level recommended in a recent independent report, nor is it a Living Wage, says the Union of Students in Ireland. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris today announced that the stipend for PhD researchers in state-funded positions will increase from €19,000 to €22,000 in January. While this increase in a step in the right directions, it falls short of the increase to €25,000 USI called for in its Pre-Budget Submission, the amount recommended in the Independent National Review of State […]

STATEMENT: Union of Students in Ireland responds to Budget 2024

[…]the repeat of the reduction in the Student Contribution Charge by €1,000 and €1,500, the €750 tax relief for renters, the increases in the SUSI grant and the increase in the minimum wage. As Minister Harris said in his statement, the package will put some money back in students’ pockets, however, Budget 2024 had no measures that will have a medium or long-term impact on the cost of third-level education, particularly the student accommodation crisis and USI sees that as a missed opportunity. As student representatives it is difficult for USI to look at this Budget as anything other than […]

Increasing number of third-level places without extra accommodation and support services is populist and futile move by Government

[…]to achieve the aim of opening-up access to third-level qualifications. “When a student can’t afford their next meal or needs to work long hours to meet their college and accommodation costs, we have failed those students. Just increasing places year-on-year, with no backup is a populist and futile move. “We already know how bad the accommodation situation is, but these extra places did not come with one extra student bed. Nor did they come with extra university or college staff or extra mental health counsellors. USI is in favour of increasing places, as long as they come with increased resources […]

Key student accommodation problems set out in USI submission to review of private residential sector

Ensuring that only landlords who meet standards legislation can claim rent-a-room tax relief and setting a definition for ‘affordable student accommodation’ are just two of the recommendations made in the Union of Students in Ireland’s submission to the Review of the Private Residential Sector. In its submission, USI says that the serious issues with student accommodation are critically and negatively affecting the student experience in Ireland. These issues include the failure of the current National Student Accommodation Strategy, the complete lack of rights for those living in digs or rent-a-room situations and the heavy reliance on the private sector which […]

Students disappointed by move away from student cards as valid ID for reduced train fares

Students are calling on Irish Rail and Transport for Ireland to reconsider the introduction of a new policy that would see Student ID not being accepted for reduced fares on train services, according to the Union of Students in Ireland. While USI and students across Ireland welcome the continuation of the reduced fares on public transport, students cannot understand the move away from student cards being valid ID. Students feel that this is an unnecessary extra imposition on them at a time when many students are being forced to travel long distances due to the accommodation crisis. USI Vice President […]

USI calls for urgent action as review of state supports for PhD researchers falls short of addressing key issues

[…]€25,000, while seemingly promising, still falls below the living wage threshold. The review’s lack of tangible recommendations regarding work status, non-EEA PhD researchers, part-time PhD researchers, and a living wage level stipend, have raised significant disappointment among PhD researchers. “The review fails to recognise PhD researchers as employees with employee status, contracts of employment, and collective bargaining rights. It also fails to recommend adequate social security provisions such as sickness and parental benefits, protective leave, maternity and paternity leave, contract extension under extenuating conditions, and pension rights. The current system leads to inconsistencies, unequal opportunities, and limited resources for researchers.” […]

“We need to get back to pre-pandemic Leaving Cert. results timeline”

[…]across the country. Everyone is more or less in agreement that the results still just aren’t early enough.   “The Leaving Cert. already places huge stress and pressure on students and can have a significant impact on their mental health. The long wait for results, and the short turnaround to the new academic year, just creates more stress for them. Securing accommodation has become almost impossible for so many students and this just makes it even harder for first years. A longer lead in time to the academic year would give students more security and time to plan and budget for […]

Urgent action needed to address abortion access inequality

Five years after the Irish people chose to repeal the eighth amendment and legalise abortion in Ireland, the Union of Students in Ireland is joining calls for urgent action to remove the barriers that many people seeking access to abortion still face. Students played a key role in the campaign to remove the eighth amendment and USI is extremely disappointed that there is still inadequate and unequal access to abortion in Ireland. Along with others, USI is demanding that the recommendations of the independent abortion review be implemented immediately. USI Vice President for Campaigns, Ross Boyd said: “We are calling […]

The Union of Students in Ireland urges all Senators to support a motion aimed at securing the rights of PhD researchers, including addressing precarious contracts and proving a living wage for all involved in teaching and research in higher education institutions. USI welcomes and supports the motion tabled by Senators Alice-Mary Higgins, Michael McDowell, and Rónán Mullen, which comes before Seanad Eireann at 8pm this evening (Wednesday, May 24). We need a fair, open and high-quality research agency that caters for the needs of our society. What we do not need from the Government is a two-tier system for international researchers that hinders Ireland’s attractiveness to research and innovation.   USI welcomes competition and collaboration in the sector.
