USI stands in solidarity with Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union encampment and pledges support for other similar student protests

[…]Students’ Union and the Trinity students who have set up an encampment for Palestine on the campus.   USI also strongly condemns attempts by the college to fine the Students’ Union €214,000 for using their right to protest to demand the university cuts ties with Israel, as it carries out genocide against the Palestinian people. TCD Students’ Union and Trinity students have carried out a number of protests against the college’s links with Israel and against attempts by Trinity management to increase rents and fees for students, which are already prohibitively high. USI members and other student representatives and activists […]

[…]Strategy, which will be published later this year,” and the Government statement said that the new policy was that “Government will fund the delivery of purpose built student accommodation.” (statement here) But this policy was already announced in November 2022, when Minister Harris said: “This landmark policy response will, for the first time, see the state providing financial support in the construction of on-site student accommodation, and underpins the policy commitments set out in Housing for All. I am pleased today to confirm Government has approved my proposal to directly intervene in the delivery of student accommodation.” (statement here) USI President, Chris Clifford […]

‘Important and needed’ mental health funding still leaves student services below recommended levels

[…]recommended ratios, they are the internationally accepted figures. And I think if anyone considers the struggles young people currently face and how many people they know that suffer from mental health issues, they would not think that one counsellor for every 2,240 students is enough. Also, it is not fair for Government to expect these services to operate from year to year, only finding out in mid-December what funding they are getting for the following year. It is practically impossible for them to plan or to hire counsellors that will sign up to that uncertainty. It’s past time that student […]

Transgender Day of Remembrance call by USI for overhaul of Trans healthcare

[…]and Citizenship, James Curry said: “The TENI survey, and numerous other research projects around the world, have shown us that transgender people who are not receiving healthcare or are left on long waiting lists, are very much at risk of self-harm and suicide. On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we remember trans people who have lost their lives to this risk or to the violence that many face for being trans. “We also need to continue to fight for better healthcare, so that our trans community can access the care they need. In the TENI research, 75 per cent of respondents […]

USI statement on the situation in Palestine

[…]which has continued to escalate in recent times. As stated time and time again by USI and many others, the international community has stood by and allowed the persecution of the Palestinian people and the upholding of an apartheid system by the occupying state of Israel for decades, to a point that is unbearable. USI stands with the people of Palestine and reaffirms its position in favour of a peaceful resistance against that apartheid and occupation, and will continue to mobilise against Israel’s international war crimes and acts of genocide against the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza. We call on […]

On World Suicide Prevention Day, USI calls for necessary investment to bring the number of student counsellors up to recommended ‘safe and ethical’ levels

[…]for Welfare, Colette Murphy said: “On this World Suicide Prevention Day, and as we get ready for the new academic year, we encourage every student to look into their on-campus student counselling services to make sure they are aware of this support if they need it during the year. There are counselling services in every college and university, and they are free and available to every student. “However, we cannot talk about student counselling services on a day like today, without highlighting how under-resourced these services are. The counsellor to student ratio is Ireland in nowhere near the levels that […]

Increasing number of third-level places without extra accommodation and support services is populist and futile move by Government

Increasing the number of third-level places without the infrastructure and support services to match, is a populist move that will result in students suffering, according to the Union of Students in Ireland. Yesterday, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, celebrated the increase in the number of students being offered their first CAO choice, attributing it in large part to the increase in the number of third-level places by the Government. However, while widening access to higher education is an important aim – that we share – increasing places without the required accommodation and support […]

USI Opening Statement in Joint Oireachtas Committee on Research and Innovation Bill 2023

[…]Statement  I thank the committee and the Chair for the invitation to participate today. I am the vice president for postgraduate affairs at the Union of Students in Ireland, which is the representative body of students for third level education in Ireland.   The research and innovation Bill is being discussed at a time when 50% of the Irish academic workforce is on casualised contracts. Postgraduate researchers have no working rights or living wage, and our expenditure on research and development is among the lowest. Furthermore, poor international research mobility, the highest postgraduate fees in the EU, funding gaps and lack […]

‘Once-off’ student fee reduction in Budget 2023 will not remove barrier of high cost of college in Ireland

[…]year will not remove the significant barriers that currently face the hardest-pressed students and their families. We need a move towards publicly funded higher education now. We also don’t see any measures in this Budget to address the serious student accommodation crisis, which is making college inaccessible, or an extreme hardship, for many.  “Without significant action on student housing, including the announcement of a new student accommodation strategy, capital grants for affordable purpose-built student accommodation and rent freezes – along with action on the cost-of-living – these tweaks and changes will not make much of a different to students who […]

[…]stipends. USI Vice President for Postgraduate Affairs, Waqar Ahmed, has signed an open letter from the newly formed PhDs’ Collective Action Union (PCAU) requesting a meeting between the group’s Acting President and the various PhD funding agencies to discuss how stipends can be brought to a liveable and equitable level. As USI has stated on numerous occasions, PCAU says the current PhD stipend is insufficient on several accounts and the current cost-of-living crisis and inflation levels have promoted this new action. The letter, which has almost 500 signatures, states: “The Central Statistics Office (CSO) reported an approximate 9.1 per cent […]

USI writes to Government on World Eating Disorders Day 2021

[…]long-term plan. It is regrettable that we only have three specialist community eating disorder teams in the country, all of which have seen increases in referrals, resulting in essential healthcare of those struggling being unmet. In addition, none of the four child and adolescent services in Ireland have the appropriate range and number of staff. It is deplorable that 85 per cent of those experiencing eating disorders find it difficult to access treatment. The following critical service gaps have been identified by Bodywhys as a result of their extensive experiences with people with eating disorders: The primary care sector often […]
