UK campaign launched to get Irish students home to vote

[…]said: “We hope that this will inspire many students across the UK to join this fight for the shared goal of reproductive justice in two jurisdictions on the island of Ireland. Cross-border collaboration and solidarity are central features of abortion rights activism on the island of Ireland and NUS-USI is firmly committed to this approach. Reproductive justice delayed is reproductive justice denied: we need free, safe, legal and local abortion access in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland now. The active support and solidarity of NUS and its member unions is vital to help us achieve this aim” Wexford […]

All-Island Civic Dialogue – USI Address

[…]non-EU students alike, as Britain becomes a much less attractive place. Therein lies the problem, the market approach to education. Competition among our Universities and Institutes. Competition between Ireland and other EU members. An increasingly marketised view of education, where the shiniest prospectus and an overtly touristic sales pitch are aimed at attracting the international student as Britain shuts it doors. So, let this be a word of caution to Government and to Higher Education Institutions: international students are not a sport. They are not for exploitation. The value of internationalising our education lies in diversity, in cultural exchange and […]

[…]built if students are forced to starve because they can’t afford rent just to get a degree. The market will not regulate itself, although there is new student accommodation opening across the country, there is not enough to meet the rising number of Irish and International students. Without legislation, this situation will only get worse.” Purpose-built student accommodation is not subject to rent restrictions of 4% introduced in late 2016 as Rent Pressure Zones due to differences in regulation like other private accommodation. USI welcomes 20 years of the Good Friday Agreement

[…]society of equals; for some it was a new dispensation for peace and democracy. For others around the world the Good Friday Agreement stands as a beacon of hope that even in deeply divided societies, communication between communities can realise peace and pave a way for democracy. For the students of Northern Ireland it means a life lived without fear of violence and the hope of prosperity and friendship for the future. That commitment was not new to students in 1998. A quarter of a century before, student leaders from across Ireland and the UK came together to lay the […]

Students vote to support justice and human rights for Palestine by backing BDS campaign

[…]dignity of person, self-determination, security and parity of esteem as all other peoples in the world today. That a boycott of Israel’s entire regime of oppression, including all of the Israeli companies and institutions that are involved in its violations of international law, is a reasonable non-violent activity that can be taken to register opposition to such crimes. That the Palestinian led BDS campaign does not target anyone or anything based on identity, but rather based solely on complicity in denying Palestinian rights and that BDS is a strategy for effective solidarity, not a dogma or ideology and certainly not […]

20,000 Students March For Publicly Funded Third-Level Education

[…]registration fee has resulted in Ireland having one of the most expensive third level systems in the world. The registration charge has increased by 275 per cent since 2008. What have we got to show for it? Falling university rankings, facilities which are not fit for purpose. Something has to change. A student loan scheme will mean the student contribution fee will increase to a minimum of €5,000. I say minimum of €5,000 because in every country that has implemented loan schemes, it always followed with a further rise in fees. In 1998, the UK implemented loan schemes at £1,000 per […]

USI President Michael Kerrigan warned that, ‘Education is in the red. Don’t be fooled by the propaganda of a student loan. An income-contingent student loan outlined in the Cassels report is a drastic increase in fees from €3,000 to €5,000 a year in disguise. The moment we accept higher fees and a loan scheme, we are saddling people with €20,000 of mortgage-modeled debt and forcing them to emigrate. The message […]
