Winning Marriage Equality – a new year’s resolution

[…]of marriage equality. To hold this referendum any later than May 1st would be an act of folly on the part of the Government – none of us want to be watching the votes coming in wishing that more people could have voted yes and by holding it at an opportune time for students, USI will deliver on our promise of a higher percentile turn-out from that demographic. This has been the largest voter registration drive USI has completed in recent years and the first step in our voter registration campaign. We had set an ambitious target to exceed 10,000 […]

The role of students in 1916 compared to the role of students today

Young people are at the forefront of change and progression in every society. On the 23rd May 2015 Ireland had affirmed to the world what it means to be a modern republic. Since the marriage referendum in Ireland, students have become aware that they can change the world through politics by becoming actively, meaningfully and substantially involved throughout political parties and beyond. Today’s youth engagement is not indifferent to politics – it is simply different to previous generations. Today’s students don’t absorb the propaganda-influenced media. They see through the heavily-edited, scripted politicians. They reject injustice and inequality. A century […]

The crisis in youth mental health issues in this country is being accentuated by the financial burden which many vulnerable students are having to bear in their pursuit of a college degree. The average student maintenance grant, at €84 per week, does not even cover rental costs alone according to the figures published in this study, and does not compare favourably to the lowest rate of Jobseekers’ Allowance in this country, at €100 per week. But this […]
