An online national student protest and socially distanced demonstrations on campuses across the island have been organisation today (March 24) by the Union of Students in Ireland to demand action from Government on the union’s Education For All campaign. The Union of Students in Ireland has launched its online SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness Guide) week, urging young people to get into the habit of getting tested regularly, after a HSE report showed an increase of 22.1% in Syphilis from 2014 to 2015. Early infectious syphilis diagnoses were 2,290% higher in men than in women with 24 men diagnosed per woman. The Mature Students Convention is open to all mature students in Ireland. The convention will include a number of workshops that are specifically tailored to meet the needs of mature students. The purpose of the convention is two fold. First, it is intended to provide mature students with vital information and skills which will help them to lead a fulfilling and successful time in college. The Union of Students in Ireland will launch the ‘Say Something’ card in R Block, IT Tralee at 1pm on Tuesday the 2nd February. The ‘Say Something’ card was developed by USI from research funded by Cosc and the Department of Justice and Equality. The research examined students’ experiences of sexual violence and harassment while in college and found that 16% of students experienced an unwanted sexual experience.
