Story about student renter being told not to use kitchen is digs proves we need legislation not guidelines – USI

BAI needs to be well positioned to regulate the new media era, and keep a core focus on audience in order to guide its future work. Ah, life as a young start-up in Dublin: it’s all wall-to-wall ping-pong tables, snazzy offices and constant networking drinks with millionaire venture capitalists aboard private planes. USI criticises TTIP for being fundamentally Anti-democratic and Toxic to European Societies

[…]the US it will most likely cause unemployment in the EU. “The biggest toxin in TTIP is its anti-democratic nature.” Donoghue said, “One of TTIP’s priorities is to introduce Investor-State Dispute Settlements (ISDS), which allow companies to sue governments if those governments’ policies cause a direct loss of profits for the business. We’ve seen immoral, unethical and virtually uncontrollable samples of this before in Germany where Vattenfall, a Swedish energy company, is suing the German government for billions of euro because of its decision to phase out nuclear power plants after the Japanese Fukushima disaster, which resulted in major profit […]

[…]to higher education is a core component of the work of the USI. As it stands SUSI is not fit-for-purpose and excludes many students and potential students who need financial support. Students Demand the Right to Access Third-Level Education in Ireland as part of Global Campaign

[…]Union of Students in Ireland are calling upon the Irish Government to include the right to third-level education in the Higher Education Authority Bill 2020, currently being considered by the Department of Education. This comes after a country-wide student call for access to education, backed up by a motion unanimously passed at USI’s Annual Congress, 2019.   At present, despite universal access to secondary education, there is only constitutional provision for primary education. This is deemed unacceptable by the student movement, and the Union of Students in Ireland demand that education be treated as a public good.   USI President, […]

USI joins forces with the Teachers’ Union of Ireland and launches ‘I Value Higher Education’ Petition

[…]there are just over 200,000 students attending higher education programs (undergraduate and post-graduate) in the Republic of Ireland. […]Business School. To make up the funding shortfall, the representative bodies are proposing a two-part solution for the next three years until a longer-term funding model is agreed by the political system. Part one involves a commitment from the next government to increase core exchequer funding to third-level by at least €100 million per year over each of the next three years. Preparing for Marriage Equality Referendum, Cork – USI President’s speech

[…]different to other issues we’ve voted on recently because the vote is so easily translated- your vote will either allow or disallow two people who love each other to be civilly married. It’s as simple as that. Every vote counts – as cliché as it sounds. The Divorce referendum in 1995 was passed by 9,114 votes -the same size as a medium sized college. Take all of you in this room. There are clearly more than 100 but let’s use 100 for example. If everyone gets 10 people to vote – yourself and 9 others – that’s over 1,000 votes […]

National campus climate survey of university students’ experiences reveal high levels of sexual violence and harassment

[…]6,000 responses shows this remains a huge issue among students, and we now have a lot of up-to-date information on students’ experiences. The last big survey like this we were involved in was the USI ‘Say Something’ survey back in 2013, so it was important we updated our knowledge. “While a lot of work has been done in raising awareness of issues around consent, this research shows a gap in knowledge of how to report and what happens and should happen when a student makes a disclosure or report. “In the survey just over 70 per cent of respondents who […]
