102 Students’ Union Officers Trained

USI proudly announces 102 Students’ Union Officers from all over Ireland being trained from their national representative body. Students’ Union Training (SUT) took place from July 10th to July 14th in Athlone IT, and saw the highest attendance of Students’ Union officers from over 30 Students’ Unions. The training was in conjunction with NUS-UK and NUS-USI. SUT aims to introduce officers to their political leadership role with their Students’ Union and provide the skills and knowledge to enable officers to consider their leadership style and effectively influence and lead those around them. The Union of Students in Ireland is calling on students to join this weekend’s National Demonstration for Palestine, which is being co-organised by the union, to show that students stand for peace and against apartheid in Gaza. USI is calling on homeowners with a spare room in their home to open their door to students  in need of accommodation. To promote the Homes For Study initiative, a major promotional campaign is now underway across Ireland. The Union of Students in Ireland has today released an update to the homes.usi.ie website, which connects students to spare rooms across the country. You can claim up to €14,000 in tax-free rent per annum if you avail of the rent-a-room relief scheme. SUSI to open its online Student Grant Application System for 2014/2015 on 8 May, 2014.

The national student grant awarding body, SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland), has announced that its online application system, for new and renewal student grants, for the 2014/2015 academic year will open on Thursday 8th May, 2014, two weeks earlier than in 2013/2014. SUSI is entering its third year of operations. Last year SUSI made significant process and resource improvements resulting in a much more efficient and effective service. Gaeltacht Placement Fees

For the Government to restore grants for student teachers’ attendance at mandatory Gaeltacht courses. Students starting their programme of initial primary teacher education since the 2012/13 academic year have been required to self-fund fees relating to three weeks of mandatory Gaeltacht placement. These costs had previously been covered by a €637 state grant for the three-week placements. With roughly 1350 participants, the overall cost of the grant was in the region of €860,000 per annum. USI ends partnership with Drinkaware, opting for independent alcohol awareness campaigns

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has officially ended any future work with Drinkaware. The motion was passed without objection at USI National Council, held in the Dublin Institute of Technology on the 9th of November. The decision was not taken lightly, it has been discussed among Students’ Union Officers nation-wide for quite some time. For the Government to ring-fence funding of €37.5m annually and to put emphasis on local 24/7 crisis intervention services. USI calls on the Government to produce a detailed, time-lined action plan to continue the reform of mental health supports improving the mental health of the whole population in line with A Vision for Change (2006), Healthy Ireland Framework (2013) and Connecting for Life (2015). For the Government to overturn the decision in Budget 2014 to impose the new pro-rata Student Contribution and reinstate the State contribution to remove apprenticeship fees. The decision taken in Budget 2014 to impose a new pro-rata Student Contribution fee and for SOLAS to cease making payment to the Institutes of Technology of 70% of the fee is a burden on student apprentices. GAA gloves launched to promote LGBT+ rights Member unions of NUS-USI are launching an initiative called Share the gLove to promote LGBT+ rights by creating rainbow GAA gloves. The glove displays part of the rainbow flag, adopted by the LGBT+ community. Research shows that depression affects LGBT people at higher rates than the heterosexual population, and it is hoped that this initiative could help improve wellbeing too. For the Government to  reverse the decision taken in Budget 2011 and decrease the qualifying criteria for the non-adjacent rate of the grant from 45km to 24km. Support and Funding for Part-Time and Further Education Students

For the Government to commit to part-time and further education students receiving the same supports that would be available to full-time students in similar circumstances and make a hardship fund available for students who are studying part-time and in further education. A number of support funds, including the Fund for Student with Disabilities, the Student Assistance Fund (SAF) and the Maintenance Grant are only available for students studying on a full-time basis in recognised Higher Education Institution. USI and the HEA Recommends a change in higher education where students will be involved in decision-making processes

  The Union of Students in Ireland and the Higher Education Authority Working Group has recommended that students are more involved in the decision making processes in higher education. USI said that for appropriate developments and progress to be made in higher education students should be involved in the decision-making process because it affects them more than anyone else. Publicly Funded Higher Education

For the Government to rule out any possible introduction of an income contingent loan scheme and to  reduce the Student Contribution Charge by a minimum of €250 and invest €1.26bn into higher education over the next decade. Budget 2018 can reduce the financial burden on families until the deliberation of the Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills has concluded. 91% of DITSU Voters Say Yes to USI

2989 students from DIT Students’ Union (DITSU) voted to remain with the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) with a total of 3265 votes cast. Polls opened at 10am on Tuesday 14th of March and closed at 8pm on Wednesday the 15th of March. The count took place in DIT Bolton Street with Students’ Unions candidates present. Final result was 91% of DITSU voters saying yes to USI for another 3 years. The Union of Students in Ireland is Urging Students to Stay away from the 2CB Drug

  The Union of Students in Ireland is urging young people to stay away from the ‘designer drug’ 2CB after six people were hospitalised following its consumption at a house party in Cork this morning. According to the 2015 National Student Drug Survey, 82% of students have at some point used illegal drugs. 94% of the 2,701 people surveyed who said they have used drugs in their lifetime have shared drugs with another person. USI  welcomed the Strategy for the Rental Sector published on December 13th by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government. The strategy focuses on four key areas: security, supply, standards and service. 74% Of Students Fear Experiencing Negative Mental Health in the Future

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) today released data showing 74% of students fear experiencing negative mental health in the future.   The Union of Students in Ireland has launched its online SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness Guide) week, urging young people to get into the habit of getting tested regularly, after a HSE report showed an increase of 22.1% in Syphilis from 2014 to 2015. Early infectious syphilis diagnoses were 2,290% higher in men than in women with 24 men diagnosed per woman.   The Union of Students in Ireland has welcomed the establishment of a new body, The National Taskforce on Youth Mental Health, which aims to increase awareness of, and reduce the stigma surrounding, mental illness. According to the Mental Health Reform’s ‘A Vision for Change’, there was an 8% increase last year in the waiting list cases in the Children and Adolescents Mental Health Services (CAMHS) from the year before. 460,000 Young People Warned to ‘Check the Register’ Before May 8th Referendum Deadline

Four national youth organisations are advising the 460,000* young people eligible to vote in the upcoming abortion referendum to ‘check the register’ before the May 8th voter registration deadline. The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), youth website SpunOut.ie and LGBTI youth organisation BeLonGTo are all urging young people aged between 18 and 25 to ensure their voices are heard in the May 25th poll by making sure they are registered. USI Welcomes New Report to Reduce Gender Inequality in Higher Education

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has welcomed a new report to address gender inequality in high education, by introducing gender quotas. USI said gender quotas will improve the third level education sector in terms of equal representation, diversity and rights. The Union of Students in Ireland is encouraging and supporting students to contact their local representatives and members of the Oireachtas Justice Committee ahead of a committee discussion on the Labour Party ‘Harassment, Harmful Communications and other Related Offences Bill’. The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) today distributed 20,000 Student Support Cards with contact details for suicide and self-harm prevention services, such as Aware, Pieta House, Walk in my Shoes, the Samaritans, and LGBT Helpline for students during their Christmas exams.
