Members of the USI Coiste Gnó met with Minister Harris last Thursday, before Friday’s announcement, but were not given any concrete information on when this strategy would be published or any details on […]

Well now we are being told that it is.” USI is calling on political groups to ensure that a move to fully publicly-funded education is included in programme for government. “Considering our reliance on a highly educated work force for economic growth, the value it brings in a social and economic sense, and the opportunities it creates where there otherwise might be none it is […]

It is dispicable that some of the most vulnerable people in society have been taken advantage of to the point where 429 students had declared themselves homeless on the night of the 2016 census, that number does not include the students who are couch surfing with friends or spending 6 hours a day on public transport just to gain an education at third level. Today however, we cautiously welcome […]

Protests that the college deem to be in line with their ‘rules’ would not work. That is not real protest. Through the fine and ongoing threats of more fines or exclusions from the college, management is punishing students for caring about the university’s complicity in genocide and about current and future students who cannot afford to pay high rents or more fees and are essentially being sent the message that third-level […]

For the Government to commit to increasing the threshold and allocation given through the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) grant scheme.  The DIT Campus Life survey details the on average the total cost to attend third level education in Dublin, with the total cost coming around to €11,000 per annum. While USI expresses its gratitude in extending and increasing eligibility for grants in recent years – especially in Budget 2017 towards postgraduates. […]decision to return the €25m withheld from colleges in the 2013 and 2014 budgets is good news for education – but represents a drop in the ocean of required investment for third level education – which will experience a 1% cut in wage related and non-wage related expenditures. However, less positive in the budget for students is the decision to stick by pre-planned increases in the student contribution fee – a major increase in the cost of college, on top of already historically high accommodation rental prices. Action needed to show zero tolerance for sexual violence and harassment in third level education

‘Important and needed’ mental health funding still leaves student services below recommended levels

[…]including our students. Colette continued: “These aren’t USI recommended ratios, they are the internationally accepted figures. And I think if anyone considers the struggles young people currently face and how many people they know that suffer from mental health issues, they would not think that one counsellor for every 2,240 students is enough. Also, it is not fair for Government to expect these services to operate from year to year, only finding out in mid-December what funding they are getting for the following year. It is practically impossible for them to plan or to hire counsellors that will sign up […]

We’re a five-person team, mostly in their twenties, writing and blogging and designing a website that’s going to revolutionise the world of online shopping. Every single day is different. Support and Funding for Part-Time and Further Education Students

For the Government to commit to part-time and further education students receiving the same supports that would be available to full-time students in similar circumstances and make a hardship fund available for students who are studying part-time and in further education. A number of support funds, including the Fund for Student with Disabilities, the Student Assistance Fund (SAF) and the Maintenance Grant are only available for students studying on a full-time basis in recognised Higher Education Institution. […](5.6% APR). The move comes as students have finished the current academic year, and are looking at finance options for postgraduate studies. The new interest rates available at Bank of Ireland will make studying at 4th level a more affordable option. In addition, postgraduate students will be able to borrow up to €7,500 and defer repayments for up to one year while they complete their course of study. Joe O’ Connor, President of the Union of Students in Ireland, said “The cost of studying at postgraduate level is extremely prohibitive for very many people, and this has been an ongoing issue […]

Students to march to Dáil on October 4 to demand Government uses Budget 2024 surplus to address accommodation crisis
